Euro-MP Welcomes Human Rights Law12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 4th Oct 2000 Diana Wallis, Lib Dem Euro-MP for Yorkshire and the Humber, welcomed one of the most important legal developments in Britain for hundreds of years today. The European Convention on Human Rights comes into force today via the Human Rights Act; a move that Diana Wallis hails as a big step forward on the path to a British legal system that works more effectively for the people. The Act means that people who feel their human rights have been breached will no longer have to go to the European Courts for redress. "Every week I receive letters from people wishing to take issues to the European Court of Human Rights," said Diana Wallis MEP, a solicitor by trade. "Now many citizens with such grievances can have them heard in British courts instead. "From today much time and money will be saved, as a more sensible method of dealing with human rights cases comes into effect."
