As protestors burn a giant Menwith Hill-style golf ball on the beach in Whitby, North Yorkshire's Liberal Democrat Euro MP Diana Wallis has once again called for plans to base US National Missile Defence systems at Fylingdales to be scrapped.
"The inclusion of Fylingdales and Menwith Hill in this scheme puts Yorkshire in the frontline of American missile defence.
"At the same time Yorkshire will neither have a say in this, nor accrue benefit in terms of protection from the system.
"It's not surprising that people are protesting. Nobody wants this system, it will not protect people in Yorkshire, and the Americans should think again.
"The real issue here is for local accountability of these bases. Harrogate Borough Council has been doing all it can to get answers. The European Parliament has actively been investigating the use of these facilities.
"The gap in the equation is the British Government. When are they going to be straight with local people about what is actually going on at these installations?"
